Buccaneer
02:19
|
|||
no fire in my kitchen
no kitchen you see
but i fry up & boil for
my pleasure & me
my bed has no trestle
my trestle no bed
but no man i know rests
a happier head
my house has no door
my door has no house
& always my sweetheart
she comes & she goes
my cellar is high
my barn it is deep
all topsy & turvy
i lay down to sleep
& sharpish awaking
i’m off at a pace
at no place i’m stopping
my stopping’s no place
my house has no door
my door has no house
& always my sweetheart
she comes & she goes
it’s over the gate
higher than noon
jumping a thistle
whistling a tune
i’m making it up
i can’t tell a lie
hands on the ground
& my shoes in the sky
my house has no door
my door has no house
& always my sweetheart
she comes & she goes

Dead To Get To Heaven
02:05
|
|||
you gotta be dead to get to heaven
you gotta be six foot underground
you gotta be rotten & smellin
you got to not be around
you gotta have slaters up your nostrils
& those bacterias be turning you into slush
when you're just a heap of pollution
it's then you'll find the kingdom of god
so come all you brothers & sisters with me
& all you little children too
so come on & die & you will see
that jesus will do it for you
don't think that i'm a pessimist
cos that would be a lie
just read the bible
& jesus will teach you to die
you gotta be dead to get to heaven
you gotta be six foot underground
you gotta be rotten & smellin
you got to not be around
you gotta have slaters up your nostrils
& those bacterias be turning you into sod
when you're just a heap of pollution
it's then you'll find the kingdom of god

Bold John Heke
04:31
|
|||
bold john heke was a wounded man
he came to the beach to execute his plan
began to destroy the whaler’s house
& all that noise brought the magistrate out
“go home, be quiet” said john heke to him
“go home now or else you’ll swim
& see that flag at the top of town
when i come back that flag comes down”
the magistrate just smiled & left
he did not believe john heke’s threat
but on the day that john heke came back
he put an end to that union jack
hear the birds chirp like mad
a flag & a thud, the swing of an axe
& heke cries “tears, who me?
but no, this moment i’m in ecstacy”
governor fitzroy is not impressed
he puts a hundred pounds on john heke’s head
but bold john heke’s not short of a few
he puts a hundred pounds on fitzroy’s head too
another flag is raised on the hill
but heke’s straight back, his look bodes ill
he says “devourer of the skies – divide, divide
for the devourer of the earth does multiply”
another flagpole cased in iron
another union jack set a-flyin
a moat, a blockhouse & thirty men
who did not want to see that flag fall again
but heke’s men are crouched the scrub
with musket, axe, spear & club
& on march eleven, 1845
heke takes the flag yet another time
well i hate to cut a story short
but john william heke was getting bored
& after abandoning his third fort
to the troops he tries to take it back for some sport
but like the soldiers he can’t get in
he can’t lose, he can’t win
heke sighs “tears, who me
i’m never going to cry, can’t you see?”

I Fell Into The Sea
03:49
|
|||
she looks out to sea, chains clinking in the breeze
then walks along the waterfront, moonlight through the trees
i’m on the jetty saying “lord, help me please”
ding a ling, the first time i saw her hips i fell into the sea
take a look at this town, i don’t see anything
shutters, a broken drain, a second storey doorbell rings
ocean fog just keeps on rolling in
ding a ling, i stepped straight through the door & fell into the sea
mermaid vagabond, both her arms on both her lips
it’s all or nothing, she don’t believe in ships
i’ve been walking, seems like eternity
ding a ling, six days, on the seventh i fell into the sea
how can i describe her look so near to me?
her eyelids, bottom lip slip away like gasoline
rainbows i’ve seen across puddles in the street
ding a ling, no one saw my face again, i fell into the sea

Thoughts Of A Seagull
04:01
|
|||
a pilot’s morning, flat calm & the sweet smell of day
squadrons doff their shells, lift off & sweep the bay
where morning sun & winos meet, this is my tense
i glide between masts & chains foretelling accidents
not a breath of wind, still grains of salt hurtle through the streets
the ragged cast is assembled, perched upon their seats
& the captain’s orders “i only want the fittest of the bunch”
me, i’m merely here for lunch
a flap-flap of the wings keeps me motionless
now the councilor is taking coffee with his scrambled eggs
wise & fat, he survives by knowing what will happen next
& the pavement is a work of art, everyone knows it is
& god isn’t interested in our comfort, neither are we in his
crooks they ride on bicycles, business women jog
well dressed devils in tell-tale hats out to walk the dog
on the fire-escape the cleaning lady mutters underneath her breath
“goody-goods, goody-goods, let me wring your necks”
a flap-flap of the wings keeps me motionless
